Manage CrowdSec enforcement agents (bouncers)

Engines (Bouncers)

The Engines page (also referred to as Bouncers) allows you to manage the enforcement agents that connect to your CrowdSec Local API (LAPI). Bouncers are responsible for applying decisions (like bans or captchas) at various levels of your infrastructure (e.g., firewall, web server, reverse proxy).

Overview

The main dashboard provides a list of all registered bouncers with the following information:

  • Name: The unique identifier for the bouncer.
  • Type: The type of bouncer (e.g., crowdsec-firewall-bouncer, crowdsec-nginx-bouncer).
  • Version: The version of the bouncer software.
  • IP Address: The IP address from which the bouncer is connecting.
  • Last Pull: The timestamp of the last time the bouncer pulled decisions from the LAPI.
  • Status: The current connection status (Connected, Disconnected, or Stale).

Managing Bouncers

Adding a New Bouncer

To register a new bouncer with your CrowdSec instance:

Click "Add Bouncer"

Click the Add Bouncer button in the top right corner of the page.

Enter Name

Provide a unique name for the bouncer (e.g., nginx-load-balancer).

Copy API Key

Once created, the system will generate a unique API Key.

[!WARNING] Copy this key immediately. It will not be shown again. You will need this key to configure your bouncer instance.

Deleting a Bouncer

If a bouncer is no longer in use, you can revoke its access:

  1. Locate the bouncer in the list.
  2. Click the Trash Icon (Delete) in the Actions column.
  3. Confirm the deletion in the dialog.

[!NOTE] Deleting a bouncer immediately revokes its API key. It will no longer be able to pull decisions or send alerts.

Troubleshooting

  • Stale Status: If a bouncer shows as Stale, it hasn't pulled decisions recently. Check the bouncer's logs and ensure it can reach the LAPI.
  • Disconnected: The bouncer has not connected for a significant period.
